Description

Allan MacDougall writes his fiancee Harriet, about losing his brother, Lt. Archibald MacDougall on 20 October, 1824, when the Pictou to Prince Edward Island Mail Packet sunk only a mile from shore.

Archy, brother to Allan and son of Alexander and Elizabeth, was a lieutenant in the 30 regiment was lost during his first leave on his way to visit his parents. He was 26 years old.

Alexander and Elizabeth Campbell MacDougall emigrated from Mingary Castle (where Alexander had been tacksman since 1792) to Pictou in 1819. They brought most of their ten children with them. They moved to PEI after buying a farm on what is now called Big Point at the mouth of the Flat River in 1822.

Allan, Alexander and Elizabeths eldest son, returned to Scotland in 1827 for Harriet Campbell. They married and had a son, Archibald who was born in March, 1830. Harriet was the daughter of Hugh Campbell, of Killundin.
