William Sidney Gilchrist was born 9 February 1901 in Poplar Hill, Pictou County, Nova Scotia and grew up on Faulkland Street, Pictou. He spent many years as a medical missionary in Angola. 

"Thomps" Thomas Gray Gilchrist was his son.
