This photo was likely taken around the time of marriage. Hugh was a shoemaker living in Thorburn, Pictou and the son of John Woodhouse MacKay (1811-1885) and Margaret Bannerman (1821-1862). Margaret was the daughter of Thomas Leadbetter (1819-1891) and Margaret Marion Smith (1823-1886) all of Barney's River, Pictou.
