In the 1870s John was an Inn Keeper at the "Ottawa House" according to birth certificate of daughter Evangeline Anne. He may have been nicknamed John "Ottawa" McKay. Stabling for horses and accommodation for travelers was offered. The Ottawa House was on George Street. Later John was a customs officer in Pictou. He lived in New Glasgow and in Pictou at various times.
