Description
I am renewing my subscription for another year. With this opportunity I would like to remark on a few observations made in Pictou while on Vacation last summer.
Pictou is to be commended for perserving its past history by the restoration of so many fine old buildings, the latest of which is the lovely old railway station. My Husband and I were delighted in seeing the progress made there.
As a child, I remember the old station quite vividly-having travelled many times on the train, with my father, from River john to Pictou .
I also recalled, as we walked around the station last summer, painfully waiting for my father while he attended to business at the old town office, or at the office of John U. Ross. On the way back to the station we always stopped at the small confectionery , which I believe was water street . Here, I was allowed to make my own selection from the filled trays- which appeared to me, at that time, to contain a enormous variety of candies.( I noted Mr Sherwood's list of Pictou businesses active in 1950 , printed in his Pictou parade of Oct 12. Perhaps he could identify the small confectionary of the mid-20's for me .)
With the demolition of so many old stations , including the attractive building in Truro to mention one, Pictou is to be congratulated for having the foresight in saving such a landmark.
We are all aware of the energy shortages forecast for the future. One would like to imagine that there is a possibility the old station could become once more the busy establishment it was during the days of my childhood.
