Alexander Howard McKay was born 19 May 1848, Plainfield, NS to John McKay and Barbara McLean.  Some of his siblings were John H McKay, Collector of Inland Revenue; Dr Hector H McKay, New Glasgow; Dr. Catherine McKay McKenzie, British Columbia and Angus McKay of Stellarton.
