Description Chief Matthew Francis

Chief Matthew Francis

Chief Matthew Francis, for years head of the Micmac Indians, at Fishers Grant reserve, died Wednesday evening, June 19, at 5 o'clock.  He was 75 years old.

The funeral service was held at the Immaculate Conception Church on the reservation Saturday morning at 10 o'clock with Father E. Chiasson, Indian Agent, conducting Requiem Mass.

The service was attended by many Indians from all over the Maritimes since the old Chief was well known and highly regarded all over the district.

He had himself travelled all over the Maritimes, especially, in his younger days.

With a council of four and the advice and counsel of the Indian Agent, Chief Francis guided the destinies of the Pictou Landing reserve successfully and maintained a reputation for law and order.  A religious man himself, he encouraged the same amongst his followers.

The Chief is survived by his widow, two daughters, Mrs. Bridget Wilmont at Pictou Landing and another in Montreal, and three sons, Andrew, Morris and Roderick.

A new chief will not be chosen to succeed him immediately.  Details as to the selection will be arranged by Father Chiasson.
