Based on the 1871 Canada Census for Cape John, it is clear this death notice is for Donald MacKenzie (Sr.), the father of Donald MacKenzie (Jr.), of Toney River, Donald MacKenzie, Jr. was the husband of Christena (MacDonald) MacKenzie of McLellan's Mountain.
Donald MacKenzie, Sr.'s date of birth would have been June 1793. In the 1871 Census for Cape John, Donald MacKenzie, a widower, listed his age as 78 and his place of birth as Scotland. This is all consistant with this death notice. He also resided adjacent to the other Donald MacKenzie - his son.
What is not known is Donald MacKenzie, Sr.'s wife's name or her time and place of birth and death. Nor do we know how or when Donald MacKenzie Sr. and Donald MacKenzie, Jr. arrived in Pictou County, Nova Scotia - as they both list their place of birth as Scotland. Donald MacKenize, Jr. was born in 1820, so they could not have arrived before that time. They initially settled on MacLellan's Mountain - as Donald Jr. married Christena MacDonald there in 1848. It is believed the entire family relocated to Toney River circa 1850.
It is further assumed that Donald MacKenzie, Sr. is buried at Riverbank Cemetery at Toney River, although no headstone has been located.
