Copy of Will for the Registrar of Deeds

The last Will and testament of John A. Campbell, Yeoman, of Mount Thom, in the County of Pictou, Province of Nova Scotia. In the name of God, Amen. the twentieth day of April in the year of Our Lord One thousand eight hundred and eighty.

I, John A. Campbell of the above mentioned locality, County & Province, farmer, being at the present time in ill health , but of sound mind and memory, reflecting upon my mortality it being appointed to all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament, thereby disposing of my earthly goods & estate in manner or proportions following.

1. I devise and order that as soon after my decease as practicable all monies due me by note of hand or otherwise be collected & in lumps deposited in the Pictou branch of the Pictou banking institution, Pictou County, the interest accruing there from to be paid annually to my beloved wife Isabella for her & my families use & benefit at pleasure until such time or times as the principal shall be required to meet the subsequent conditions and a proportions of this my last Will & testament.

2. I devise & bequeath all my land property together with the buildings and appurtenances thereto belonging or in any wise appertaining unto my beloved son Angus James Campbell, subject to the conditions and obligations of a certain Bond, made & executed by me to my late father Alex. Campbell deceased bearing date the 1st. day of May A.D. 1879. Also the stock, team, harness, farming implements , household furniture & clothing not otherwise disposed of by the further dispositions of this testament, (two lines scratched out and initialed) and the cash sum of $50.00 (Fifty Dollars) to be paid to him the said Angus J. Campbell, when he arrives at the age of twenty one years, and drawn from funds invested in virtue of the immediate preceding section of this testament.

3. To my son Alexander Campbell I bequeath from the same funds the cash sum of $200.00 (Two hundred Dollars) when he likewise arrives at the age of 21 years & that he receive until that time such opportunities of education as our common Schools system affords & also he provided with a home, board School prerequisites & clothing for the same period and in the event of his inability at that age through disease or natural infirmity to provide for himself a home & independent livelihood that he be entitled & privileged to enjoy the home & home comforts of & with his brother Angus, his heirs or assigns in common and on equal terms with him or them during his natural life.

4. I will & ordain that the balance of the remaining funds invested at the time that the youngest surviving member of my family attain to hir or her majority the same be paid over to him or her as the case may be at Will & pleasure.

5. I will and ordain that my beloved wife Isabella while remaining unmarried shall have principal charge & control of the property and estate hereinbefore bequeathed to our beloved son Angus James until such time as he attains to his majority & likewise enjoy the home & free & common use of furniture clothing i.e. in common & in equal rights with him, if remaining unmarried until the close of life.

6. I will & devise that in the case of the decease of any of the members of my family in this Will & testament referred to or in anywise included in its spirit & dispositions previous to their coming at the age of manhood or womanhood as the case may be that the estate goods chattels or monies bequeathed to such shall revert to the surviving members in equal parts or portions as near as may be found practical to apportion them.

7th. I will & order further that as soon after my demise as in the judgement of my executors & executrix may be deemed proper the following stock, farming implements & chattels be offered for Sale at Public Auction the profits & proceeds thereof to be at the service & in the interests of my beloved wife Isabella to wit - 1 colt, 2 yearling heiffers, 1 two years old bull, mower, Bobsleds, with whipple trees & tugs, pair cart wheels, waggon box, express waggon, riding saddle, sett double & nigger saws, broad axe, 2 inch chisel, & 2 inch augers i.e.

Lastly, I hereby appoint as my true and lawful executor & executrix for duly fulfilling carrying into effects the disposition of this my said last Will & Testament my cousin Alexr. Campbell of Mt. Tom, farmer, and S. Archibald of Watervale, West River Esqre and my beloved wife Isabella, giving & granting unto them all such power & authority as executors & executrix may by law possess & exercise.

In witness whereof I have hereunto my hand and seal subscribed and set at Mount Thom Pictou County Province aforesaid this twelfth day of April in the year of our Lord first above written.

I do hereby certify that the foregoing instrument consisting of three & 1/4 pages, is an exact and literal copy of the last Will and Testament of John A. Campbell, late of Mount Tom, in the County of Pictou, Farmer, deceased, Testate, which has been duly filed and admitted to Probate in accordance with the practice of the Court.
