James MacKinnon

The Herald of Chippewa, Wis. of December 14th contains the following obituary notice of James MacKinnon aged 77, who died there on December 13th:—

"He had been ailing for the past nine years." He travelled extensively for his health, spending winters in the south or in California.  It was a year ago last July that he became bedridden.  He remained home during all this illness. He often expressed strong hopes of being able to travel again.  But the past six or eight months his health was greatly weekened and for the past several weeks it was noted that he was near death's door." The Herald says:  "The deceased was born in Nova Scotia, April 7th, 1843.  After attaining to maturity he engaged in the logging and lumbering business in that section.  When twenty-five years of age he came to Northern Wisconsin arriving in Chippewa Falls October 14th, 1869.  He has resided here continuously ever since, a span of fifty-two years.  He is one of the pioneer lumbermen of this section, having been engaged most of those years himself, though in his early career in the Chippewa Valley he was associated for three years with the late Daniel McLeod, Eau Claire.  Mr. McKinnon was a successful lumberman and business man.  He was a director of the First National Bank for thirty-five years.  Her served as alderman of this city for one term and was a member of the school board, park board, president of the Bank of Bloomer at one time; a devout member of the M. E. Church, being chairman of the board of stewards for many years.  He was a liberal giver to the church and in a quiet way contributed to charitable enterprises and was a liberal giver privately to many worthy purposes.  He was always unostentatious.

Surviving are the wife and two daughters, Mrs. J. E. Pannier, of this city, and Mrs. John Carter, of Menomonie, Wis.; also surviving are two sisters and one brother in Nova Scotia.  The sisters are Miss Effie MacKinnon, of Pictou, and Mrs. Tom MacLeod, of Mulgrave.  The brother is Mr. Rod MacKinnon, of Bay View. 

Mr. MacKinnon was a native of Toney River, Pictou County.  He was a brother-in-law of G. A. Redmond, of Halifax.
