Christopher Irving of Mount Thom
A RECORD OF THE DECENDENTS OF CHRISTOPHER IRVING OF MOUNT THOM,
PICTOU COUNTY, NOVA SCOTIA
CHRISTOPHER IRVING, THE FIRST, was born in Ecclefechan, Dumfriesshire, Scotland in 1750 and was married to Margaret McQueen, widow of Johnathan Radcliffe. They lived there until 1822 on the farm known as the Burch. (The Bucke)
Margaret MacQueen had three daughters by her first marriage, viz:
- Mercer, born in 1791. Married J. Poole
- Mary, born 1792 married Dr. Johnathan Henderson, Salt Springs. A daughter of Mary married Wm. Munro, father of Charles Munro of West River. There were two Henderson boys, viz: (Dr.) Johnathan, who in the year 1915 purchased the property of John MacLean, Brookland, where he resides with his family.
- Johanna, born 1794.
CHRISTOPHER IRVING emigrated to Nova Scotia in 1822, and settled on the New Road, Mount Thom where he farmed and kept an Inn. He died April 23, 1838, aged 88 years.

SECOND GENERATION:
1. Alexander MacQueen Irving (2 Gen) Christopher (1 Gen) married Rachel MacGillvray of Lower Mount Thom. He died Nov. 13, 1862 aged 56 years. His wife died March 10, 1883 aged 72 years.
Children:
- Christopher, married Catherine Fraser of East River and lives at Three Brook, Cariboo, Pictou County, NS. Now (1913)
- John William who married and is living at Follie Lake, Colchester County, NS
- Johnathan who married and moved to Maine.
- Christy Ann married and lived in Boston.
- Alexander MacQueen died February 8, 1890 aged 37 years.
2. John Grant Irving (2 Gen) Christopher (1 Gen) married Ann Clunus MacKay. He died October 15, 1877 aged 77 years. His wife died January 19, 1869 aged 68 years.
Children:
- John Grant, killed in a gold mine at Mount Uniacke, May 11, 1866 aged 28 years.
- Charles died in Boston, May 14, 1895, aged 53 years, unmarried.
- Christopher married Margaret White Tupper of New Glasgow. He died in Halifax. Was a carriage builder.
- William, born February 1, 1830, married Christy MacKay, daughter of Hector MacKay of Pictou. He died April 17, 1889, aged 59 years. His wife died, April 8, 1901, aged 59 years. They were married December 15, 1870. On January 24, 1872, he was appointed a Justice of the Peace and in June 1878 he was elected Elder of the Presbyterian Church.
- James married and is living in Nebraska. (1913)
- Alexander married in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and died there in 1912.
- Margaret married Thomas Proudfoot of Lower Mount Thom.
- Belle married William Proudfoot. [brother to Thomas]
3. Kenneth MacQueen Irving (2 Gen) Christopher (1 Gen) married first Margaret Halliday of Pictou. She died on December 23, 1862 aged 53 years. His second wife, Margaret B. Reid died August 27, 1879, aged 75 years. He died July 14, 1882, aged 72 years.
Children:
- John married Annie, daughter of Christopher Irving (3 Gen) John Grant (2 Gen) Christopher (1 Gen) He died in 1812. His widow and family live at Riversdale, Colchester County, Nova Scotia. (1913)
- Jane died unmarried in Boston.
- David removed to the USA.
- Charles married and lives in the USA
- Kenneth MacQueen married Mary Patterson, daughter of Dr. George Patterson of New Glasgow; she was his second wife.
- Tibitha married Thomas McCoul of Pictou. She died January 31, 1888, aged 51 years and was buried in New Glasgow.
- Johnathan married a daughter of Johnathan Henderson (2 Gen). He lives in Boston, a trustee of the estate of the late famous Mrs. Eddy (Christian Scientist).
- George died unmarried.
- Margaret married Capt. Thomas O’Brien, Lyons Brook.
- George Christopher died July 16, 1861 aged 13 years.
4. Charles Irving (2 Gen) Christopher (1 Gen) married Jennie McArthur.
Children:
- Emily married Capt. Alex O’Brien.
- Margaret died unmarried.
5. Christopher Irving (2 Gen) Christopher (1 Gen) married Mary Ramsbotham at Fall River, Mass., July 23, 1838 (36). She was born January 6, 1818 near Liverpool, England, and came to Nova Scotia with her parents when 12 years of age. They settled at Fall River. Christopher Irving and his wife move to St. Louis, Missouri, where they lived six months, then to Naples, Illinois, where they remained for a year, finally settling in Chambersburg, Illinois. He died there December 24, 1859. His wife died May 27, 1901.
Children:
- James Charles, born 1841, married and living in Colorado. He has one son and one daughter.
- Edward born 1846, living in Chambersburg, Illinois. He has two sons and two daughters, all married.
- A daughter (name unknown) born 1844 died 1899.
- Molly married James Chenowyth. She died the year after her marriage.
- Alexander MacQueen born 1843 married and living in Gallatin, Montana. He has two sons and two daughters.
- Margaret MacQueen born 1858 married James Chenowyth (relict of her sister Molly) whom she married four years after the death of her sister. They lived in Chambersburg, Illinois.
- John Grant married and lived 30 miles from Chambersburg. He had three daughters, two of who were deaf. There survived Mary Ramsbotham Irving, six children, thirty-one grand children and thirty-three great grand children.
6. Jane Irving (2 Gen) Christopher (1 Gen) married John Murray.
Children:
- James married in California.
- Mercer, unmarried, lived near Pictou.
- Charles died in Mexico.
- David died in Youth.
- John David married Jane Dawson and lived near Pictou, Nova Scotia, where he died August 19, 1913, 65 years of age. He was elected an Elder in the Prince Street Presbyterian Church, September 22, 1895. He had no children.
- William married in California.
- Margaret unmarried, lived near Pictou, Nova Scotia.
7. Tabitha Irving (2 Gen) Christopher (1 Gen) married (first) David Underwood of River John. He died in 1836. Second husband, Benjamin Cassidy.
Children of Tabitha and David Underwood:
- George W. married Margaret Fraser who died April 16, 1867 aged 37 years. He then married Margaret Graham. George W. died September 8, 1887. Children of George and Margaret Fraser Underwood: John, ex Mayor of New Glasgow; Lydia married Rev. George of Montreal; Kate married S. T. McCurdy, Auditor. Children of George and Margaret Graham Underwood: Charles, a medical doctor, died after graduation; Hattie lives in New Glasgow. [1913]
- John, a farmer, lived in River John.
- Margaret died young.
- Christopher died at Mount Thom, Nova Scotia.
- Isabella died in childhood.
8. Margaret Irving (2 Gen) Christopher (1 Gen) married Donald Forbes of New Glasgow. She died November 2, 1859 in her 48th He died October 5, 1862, aged 73 years.

- John born June 24, 1844 died at Oakland, California, aged one year.
- Jessie died October 11, 1855, aged 13 months.
- Christopher died June 11, 1847 aged 11 months.
9. James Irving (2 Gen) Christopher (1 Gen) married Jane Fraser and lived at Upper Mount Thom, Nova Scotia. His wife was a daughter of John Fraser of Rosshire, Scotland and Margaret Munro his wife. They emigrated to Mount Thom when Jane was 10 years old.

- John Grant, born June 20, 1845.
- Margaret MacQueen, born August 2, 1847.
- Mary Anne, born February 13, 1854.
- Isaac, born May 18, 1856.

- Archibald, born June 18, 1858.
- Tabitha, born April 15, 1860.
- Susan, born February 28, 1863.
- Emily, born September 14, 1866.
THIRD GENERATION:
Christopher (3 Gen) John Grant (2 Gen) Christopher (1 Gen) married Margaret Tupper of New Glasgow.
Children:
- Annie married John Irving (1st); William Wall (2nd)
- Jane married John Hubbard of Boston.
- Martha died unmarried.
- Mathilda died when young [as did]
- Margaret Eveline
- Mary Samantha married Andrew McKay and lives in Washington, DC.
- John Grant lives in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
- William A.R. married and lives in Scotsburn, Nova Scotia.
- Edward married and lives in Scotsburn, Nova Scotia.
- Tabitha died young
- Charletta died young
- Murray died young
William Irving (3 Gen) John Grant (2 Gen) Christopher (1 Gen) married Christy McKay.
Children:
- Annie living in Boston.
- John Grant married and living in the Klondike.
- Hattie married John Webster of Sommerville, Massachusetts.
- Margaret married Osborn McLean of Scotsburn, Nova Scotia.
- Lottie died March 29, 1901, aged 21 years.
- Ella married Arthur Gibson, Watertown, Massachusetts.
- Eva married Alex Frame, Edmonton, Alberta.
Margaret (3 Gen) John Grant (2 Gen) Christopher (1 Gen) married Thomas Proudfoot of Lower Mount Thom, Nova Scotia.

Belle Irving (3 Gen) John Grant (2 Gen) Christopher (1 Gen) married William Proudfoot of Upper Mount Thom, Nova Scotia.

- Mary died unmarried.
- James died unmarried.
- John lives at Mount Thom, Nova Scotia. [1913]
Captain John Irving (3 Gen) Kenneth MacQueen (2 Gen) Christopher (1 Gen) married Annie Irving, daughter of Christopher. He died in 1912.

Christopher (3 Gen) James (2 Gen) Christopher (1 Gen) married Christy Munro who died at Salt Springs, April 17, 1915. They lived at Upper Mount Thom but moved to Salt Springs where their son George had a store.

- George Underwood married Lola Gass of Salt Springs
- Roland married Mabel Irving
- Albert Nelson drowned in British Columbia aged 24 years.
John Grant (3 Gen) James (2 Gen) Christopher (1 Gen) married Wilena McKay.

- Johanna Corinne married George Hulsar, rancher
- Mead Bartlett died at 20 years
- Willena Maud married Harry Gessner, cond S.P.RR.
- Leslie died young
- Mildred Margaret married Walter Greenburg, Min. Eng.
- Menlo Park married Norman Harper, fireman S.P.RR.
- Mapletown Lauretta married Henry Hanson, fireman S.P. RR
- John Grant studied dentistry
They all lived in Placerville, California
Margaret MacQueen Irving (3 Gen) James (2 Gen) Christopher (1 Gen) married William D. Smith, Port Hood. They moved to Pictou, Nova Scotia. Mr. Smith died there in 1906.
Children:
- Hedley V. married Charlotte Fisher
- Milton married Garfield Giffin. They moved to Vancouver, British Columbia. Giffin died December 30, 1910. Mrs. Giffin served overseas as a nurse, 1915 to 1919.
- Cecil married William Powell a Civil Engineer. They lived in Victoria, B. C. and afterwards in Vancouver, B.C.
Mary Ann Irving (3 Gen) James (2 Gen) Christopher (1 Gen) married William D. Maxwell, Lower Mount Thom, Nova Scotia.
Children:
- James Renforth, born October 20, 1871. Married October 3, 1906 to Beatrice McIntosh at Sydney.
- Louis Robert, born November 21, 1872. Died February 29, 1896.
- Alice Maud born [Feb] 21, 1874
- Charles Archibald, born October 7, 1875
- Martha Jane, born July 24, 1877, married July 18, 1906 to Clarence Moore.
- Annie Rose, born June 8, 1879. Lives in Boston, a graduate nurse.
- Lilla Belle, born February 13, 1881. Died October 31, 1891.
- Mary Ella, born August 23, 1885. Married October 25, 1905 to Lawrence McKay
- Susan Sophia, born July 24, 1887
- Florence Emily, born July 28, 1889
- Lila Isabel, born June 20, 1895
Jane Irving (3 Gen) James (2 Gen) Christopher (1 Gen) married Alexander Smith of Port Hood. He was a brother of William D. Smith.

FOURTH GENERATION
Family of Ella Belle Irving & Arthur M. Gibson
Ella Belle (or Isabelle) Irving (4 Gen) William (3 Gen) John Grant (2 Gen) Christopher (1 Gen) married Arthur Morton Gibson in Somerville, Massachusetts, May 10, 1911. The couple met in Boston after each had moved there as young adults. The couple had the same birthdate: December 4, 1881. Ella was born at Mount Thom, Nova Scotia. Arthur was born at Clyde River, Shelburne County, Nova Scotia.

- Carol Irving Gibson, born December 15, 1912 in New York City
- William Arthur Gibson, born December 22, 1914, New York City
- James Parker Gibson, born August 8, 1917, Winthrop, Massachusetts
The family lived in Watertown, Massachusetts 1917 – 1957 (38 years at 29 School Street)
Arthur M. Gibson died January 5, 1945. At the end of October 1957, Ella sold the home in Watertown, and she and her daughter Carol moved to Santa Rita, New Mexico, where son/brother James Parker and his family were living. Ella died October 1, 1960, in Santa Rita and was buried in Cambridge, Massachusetts at Mount Auburn Cemetery with her husband Arthur and sister Hattie, who had preceded her in death.
