Estate of James Matheson late Roger’s Hill, Farmer, deceased, Testate

Copy of Will for the Registrar of Deeds

In the name of God, Amen.

I James Matheson of Roger’s Hill, in the County of Pictou, Farmer, being of sound and disposing mind do publish and declare this my last Will and testament.

I give devise and bequeath to my son John David his heirs and assigns the remainder of my home farm on which I reside, in addition to what he holds from me by deed. To Have and To Hold the same with the houses, buildings, and appurtenances thereunto belonging, or in any way appertaining, to him the said John David Matheson his heirs and assigns forever, Subject to the support and maintenance in a proper manner, of my daughter Isabella in health and in sickness for and during her natural life, should he be required so to do, should my said daughter Isabella hereinafter leave her sister Jane’s where she at present lives, and desires to return to her old home.

I will and direct she shall then have the bed room heretofore occupied by myself, together with the use of the bedrooms she formerly occupied so long as she may require the said rooms respectively, with the bed, bedding, ad other furniture belonging to my room, while she needs the sae, but the bed & bedding of her own room I give to her wherever she may reside.

Should my daughter Isabella not return to her home to reside, I will and direct that my said son John David shall provide and deliver to her or his order twenty bushels of oats, tree hundred pounds of good flour and fifteen bushes of potatoes yearly and every year during her natural life, or the value of the said articles in money at a=market price, as they may respectively agree upon.

I also will and direct that my said son John David shall keep summer and winter for his sister Isabella, two sheep of which she is to have the benefit and increase.

I also will and direct that my said son John David shall pay to my two daughters Jane the wife of Nathan Stiles, and Mary Catharine the wife of Robert Collie respectively the sum of twenty dollars within four years after my decease.

I give and bequeath to my said daughter Jane Stiles, one Cow and to Mary Catherine the two and a half year old heifer ow on the premises – for their own use and benefit, respectively.

I give devise and bequeath to my said son John David Matheson, all the residue and remainder of my personal property with all the debts due me of all and every
kind whatsoever, he to pay all lawful debts and funeral and testamentary charges and the erection of a Headstone at my graves.

I do nominate and appoint John Thomas Matheson of Roger’s Hill Farmer, and George Logan of Hardwood Hill Farmer, executor of this my last Will. Trusting they will see the same honestly and faithfully carried into operation, hereby revoking and annulling all other and former wills by me at any time made.

In witness whereof I have hereunto my hand and Seal Subscribed and affixed at roger’s Hill aforesaid this nineteenth day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and Eighty.

I do hereby certify that the foregoing instrument consisting of two pages, is an exact and literal copy of the last Will and Testament of James Matheson, late of Roger’s Hill in the County of Pictou, Farmer, deceased, Testate, which has been duly filed and admitted to Probate in accordance with the practice of the Court.

Given under my hand at Pictou this twentieth day of January A.D. 1883.
