Roland H. Sherwood Featured in the Atlantic Advocate

PICTOU: Well known Shiretown author Roland H. Sherwood has been featured in an article in the January edition of the Atlantic Advocate, on of the foremost magazines published in the Atlantic Provinces.

Written by Pauline A. Pottelberg, the article outlines the career of Dr. Sherwood, covering a number of his endeavours which are little known to the public. For example he has been an entertainer, ventriloquist, and a sleigth of a hand artist for many years, as well as a playwright, actor, public speaker, raconteur on both radio and TV, photographer and CBC cameraman. All of this in addition to being the author of 8 books, five of which are currently on the newsstands.

‘Rollie’ as he was more popularly known has also with young people for most of his life. He was the Director of the Pictou Community Center Until that popular gathering place was destroyed by fire, and he organized and still directs for the Pictou Centrettes, a majorette group that ahs been in continuous existence for 29 years.

In May 1976, his hometown of Amherst through its chamber of Commence gave him the accolade of ‘Citizen of the Year, presenting him with an award at a testimonial dinner in recognition of his talents as an author.

Although he lived in Amherst in his early years, Dr. Sherwood was transferred by his employers, the, Maritime Telegraph and Telephone Company to Pictou in 1938, and he has resided here ever since.

In 1977, the town of Pictou acknowledged his more than 40 years of service to the community by honouring him at a testimonial dinner and presenting him with an award. He was again named Citizen of the Year.

His greatest honour came on May 1, 1977, when he received an honorary Doctorate of Letters degree from St. Francis Xavier University, recognizing his considerable contribution to the history of the Atlantic Provinces.

For many year, the many talented Roland Sherwood was also a long distance runner in his home town of Amherst, and in 1971, he was elected into the Nova Scotia Hall of Fame.
