Description The Warrior

The Warrior- an excerpt from the Pictou Advocate, January 28, 1976.

I was very much interested in Mr.Sherwood's Story of the Warrior in the Advocate of Jan.21, 1976. I would like topoint out that the model of the Warrior by Duncan Johnson, referred to ass the natural born naval architect, was on display at the Paris Esposition of 1896, and was one of the exhibits at the Provincial Museum on Citadel Hill, Halifax, when George MacLaren was curator there.

One wonders about the orgin of Duncan Jognson's life long love affair with ships since he was born aboard ship while his family was crossing the ocean. They came from the Isle of Coll, In the Inner Hebribes, on the ship Economy, Out of Tobermorry, landing in Nova Scotia in early October, 1819.

His Father Lauchlin Johnson and his mother , the former Sarah McKinnon, lie in Campbell's Cemetery , Seafoam. They had Twelve Children . All but one married and had large families. It is interesting to note that three of them married Elliotts of the same family and two of them married Hendersons of another family. so that there were great many double cousins in Duncan's children's Generation. In fact these Johnsons were so prolific that it would be safe to say that the majority of people living within a radius of twenty miles of River John have descended from lauchlin Johnson.

His Great, great granddaughter , Thelma Johnson, R.R. 2, Scotsburn, has spent much time and money in researching the family history and has amassed a great deal of well-organized information with pain-staking care. I am sure she would be glad to hear from anyone who has any human-interest stories on what must be one of the largest groups of rugged individualist in the country. Many of her friends and relatives have expressed the hope that we shall be able to purchase this material in book form in the not too distant future.
