Pictou Academy Prepares Plays

Pictou Academy is a hive of activity, not only during school hours, but also during the late afternoon and evening as final preparations are being made for the presentation of the annual program on the last Thursday and Friday of November.

This year, for a change, the program is to consist of three one-act plays with musical interludes.  The plays selected are of differing types and offer a challenge to the young players as well as variety for the audience.  "The Little Nut Tree", which retells the story of the nursey rhyme and attaches a moral to it, is an attractive fantasy in Spanish costume; "Still Stand the House" is a tense drama which has been a favourite in drama competitions in Canada as author and setting are Canadian; "Rory Aforesaid" is a rollicking farce set in the West Highlands of Scotland, a comedy which has been enjoyed by many audiences on both sides of the Atlantic.  Special interest attaches to the last two of these plays as they are included in the literature of courses of Grades X and XI.  Readers who associate school collections of literature with boredom are assured that they need have no fears.

The interludes by the Glee Club, assisted by soloists, include some of the ballads associated with the period of border strife between England and Scotland.  The group are trying some experiements and the presentation should be novel as well as interesting. The second interlude includes two songs in which some liberties have been taken with the words and the choir are enjoying the local allusions.

Programs are now on sale and any Academy student will be glad to find purchasers. Those buying programs, price 50 cents, are assured of an enjoyable evening and of supporting many worthwhile activities of the students.  The money is required this year to buy uniforms for the girls' basketball and the boys' hockey and football teams.
