Description Remodelling of New Glasgow Jail & Court House Specs

Specification Alterations, New Glasgow Jail & Heating apparatus for Court House.

Specification: of the labour required and the materials to be used in the remodelling of the New Glasgow Jail, according to drawings and specifications prepared by Melville McKean.

The contractor must examine the old building and make himself thoroughly acquainted with the nature of old work to be taken out, the nature of the bottom under the old brick, and any and all matters appertaining to the old building.  So that he may be in a position to form a correct estimated of the nature and style and quantity of the work he may have to perform; as the commissioners will in no case pay for any extra work or material that the contractor may claim for obstructions met with, in the building of the new work into the old or any mismeasurements or miscalculation of the contractor.

Tear up the old brick floor and wood floors.  Take down all the wood partitions and remove all the old material away from the building.

In removing the old partitions if it is found necessary put in new sommers 10 + 10 inches of good sound spruce.  This is to support the joist in court room floor. 

Cellar Drain

Excavate for cellar drains under cement at least eight inches square.  These drains will run all around the outside walls main partion wall and diagonalls across the cellar to be continued underneath the wall and away from the building to street drain or outlet with a fall of at least one foot in ten away from the building.  This drain will be filled with broken stone in the building.

 

Tile Drain

Outside a four inch wide vitrified tile drain pipe, joints put together with cement. 

Excavate for Cement

Excavate cellar floor six inches below the present floor line and have it perfectly level.

Stone Filling

Fill in three inches of small broken stone properly rammed and hammered down level and straight on top.

Grouting

On top of stone, lay on two inches of coare cement grouting comprised of cement on part, coarse sand and gravel six parts.

Cement

When the grouting has throughly dried lay on one ince thick good cement mortar containing one part cement and two parts clean sharp sand this coat must be worked perfectly level, straight and smooth.

Footings

All partitions to have stone footings at least six inches thick for 12 inch partions twenty inches wide; for 8 inch partions, sixteen inches wide.  Set footings one inch below the finished cement floor line.

Brick Partitions

Partitions to be built of the very best quality smooth solid hard burnt brick, to be laid in cement mortar using cement one part, sand three parts.     Point up all joints on both sides of partitions.        Point up all joints in the outside stone walls. 

Build up window with stone the same style as old wall and finish on both sides to correspond with the old wall.

Build in iron doors and locks as the work proceeds.  The doors in all cases to be built fair with inside of partitions and to open out.

Bar Doors

Bar doors for cells.  6 feet 3 inches high, two feet wide.  Main corrider doors.  Six feet six inches high, two feet six inches wide. 

Frame of flat-iron 2 1/2" x 5/8".  Headers and sills to run four inches into brick work mortired to receive side jambs.  Jambs to be tennonted into sills and headers and clinched to have two side braces extending four inches into brick and two stops 3" x 1/2" inch welded therto.

Doors to have frame of 2" x 1/2" inch iron strongly fastened together adn kneed at corners.  Three cross tennonted into side bars and clinched.  Upper and lower rails 2" x 1/2" to have eight 5/8 inch holes drilled to receive upright steel bars.  Cross rails to have eight 3/4 inch drilled through which the upright steel bars pass.

Small doors to have eight, and large doors ten upright 3/4 inch sound steel bars.  To be shouldered and clinched into the top and bottom rails.  Door to be hinged to cases with 3/4 inch iron pintals at top and bottom.

Each door to be provided with excentric lock and hasp.   Bolt 2 1/2" + 1.  Excentric 1 1/4" + 1/2" to throw the bolt 1 1/2 inches.   Rod of 3/8 inch round iron, crank and pin of suitable sizes.  Hasp 2 1/2 + 1/2" iron, upper end to extend into and turn up over one brick.  Catch for lock. 

3/8 round iron, hooked inside of brick Rod to work inside of 3/4 inch iron pipe.  These locks must be built in very strong and at the same time the brickwork is being built.  Case for bolt may be cast iron.

Stone

Build in cut stone headers to all doors finely tooled all around

 Lime Wash

Lime wash the ceiling and outside stone walls. two coats

Plumbing

Provide and fit up in jail two cast iron porcelain lined, hopper closests four inch traps to have two inch vent from pipes connected connected to main ventilation pipe at ceiling. Hand hoes in hopper closet traps to be bolted on.  Main soil pipe to be six inch cast iron medium.  Soil pipe from closets four inch medium ventilation pipes from main soil pipe four inc cast iron, light, to extend outside the building and up three feet above roof. All soil pipe to be put together with lead to be double caulked.

Provide and fit up two cast iron enamelled corner sinks discharge two inch cast iron trap pipe and fittings

Provide and fit up in hall two water closet sysson cisterns of cast iron connected to water closets in jail with 1 1/4" inch galvanized iron fittings water supply from city pressure connected with 3/4 inch galvanized iron pipe and malleable iron fittings.  Water supply to sinks from city pressure through 3/4" inch galvanized iron pipe and fittings. Place two 3/4 inch finished compression stop corks in halls so that water to sinks can be controlled by the jailor.     The closet cisters will be worked from the hall fit with chains and pulls to work from floor.

All plumbing must conform to the plumbing laws of the Town of New Glasgow in anything in this specification does not so conform to above mentioned laws the contractor must make the defect good. 

Hot Water Heating

Provide proper concrete floor at least ten feet square in which to set the boiler.

Boiler

Provide and fit up one No. 6 "Daisy" hot water boiler, smoke pipe of proper size made of 20 guage iron.  Provide all necessary fire tools and business for cleaning boiler.

Pipe

All main pipes both feed and return to be two inch where they leave the boiler and wher they return.  The red lines and figures on plan indicate the sizes of feed and return pipes although only the one pipe is indicated on plans.

Valves

Each set of main pipes to be fitted with two inch brass peet or full opening valves; and half inch stop corks for drip valves.  

Boiler to be fitted with one inch brass blow off cork.  All radiators fitted with 1 1/4 inch nickel plated valves air taps and floor plates.  All box coils to be fitted with two gate valves on each coil siad valves to open with keys.  Valves to be placed so that coils may be removed when water is shutt off.  Put 3/8 inch drip corks between coils and valves.

Coils

Box coils made on one inch pipe malable iron fittings and stays.  To be fastened to stone walls with strong wrought iron brackets and stays.  The main feed pipe for coils goes next ceiling and the return pipe under these main pipes have no connection with other main pipes.  The sizes marked in plans for coils include the number of feet of one inch pipe exclusive of fittings.

Radiators

All radiators to be Safford's patent hot water radiators, and the sizes indicated on the heating plan.

Floor & Ceiling Plates

Put floorand ceiling plates in all places where pipes pass through floors ceilings and partitions.

Expansion tank 24" + 16" made of best 22 guage galvanized iron fitted with water glass and other necessary mountings.  Expansions pipe 1/4 inch to be returned to cellar drain at or near the boiler so that janitor may note the overflow.  This tank will be placed in court room floor hall.  

Provide automatic water tank to supply the expansion tank and system fitted with ball cork globe and check valves and overflow pipe.

Hangers

Provide all hangers in basement of wrought iron fastened up in the strongest possible manner.

Painter

All pipes in jail and boiler to be painted two coats of Princes metallic paint mixed with lintseed oil.  All radiators to be enamelled in suitable colours and touched off with bronze. The whole apparatus to be left perfectly watertight and in fist class working order.

Wood Doors

Put wood doors on hall side of jail doors.  four pannelled 2'6" + 6'6' + 1 3/4" made of pine neatly moulded.  Facings of the same material.  Doors inged with four inch malleable iron loose pin butt hinges.  Good mortice locks steely keys imitation bronze knobs and trimmings.

Finally

The contractor will be responsible for all measurments quantities etc.

All materials must be new and of the very best and approved quality   The work must be done ina thorough first class and workmanlike manner and all materials and workmanship must be to the entire satisfaction of:

                              The inspector in charge of the work and of the Commisioners of Public Property for the town of New Glasgow.
