Description History of McLellans Brook

“Plymouth, Pictou County

I James Alexander McLellan now wish to record by way of memoir the descendants of my ancestors beginning at my great-Grandfather who was named John McLellan a native of Loch Broom Scotland. Born in the year 1735 and emigrated in the Ship Hector the first emigrant vessel that ever arrived in Pictou harbour*. She came on the 15th Sept. 1773. My Great-Grandfather was accompanied by his two brothers James and William. William settled on land at the West River. James and John settled on the East River. John my great-Grandfather settled at the mouth of Brook hence the name McLellans Brook, he was married to Jane McDougall by whom he had a family of one son and three daughters named Mary, Christy, Margaret and Donald. He died on Sept. 1st, 1829 aged 94 years. He was described to me as a man about average height and of stout and strong build. Jane his wife died on 22nd January, 1829, aged 83 years. Donald my grandfather….was born in 1783, he settled and lived on his father’s farm was married to Mar McNaughton in the year 1821, he built a large stone house. He died on 8th Feb. 1863 aged 80 years. Mary his wife died on 22 Sept. 1864 aged 78 years. Their family consisted of nine sons and four daughters, [vit?] John, born 1805 died aged 83 years. Mary born 1807 died aged 85 years. Alexander born 1809 died aged 84 years. Jane born 1811 died aged 91 years. Catherine born 1814 died aged 78 years. Donald born 1816 died aged 65 years. Evan born 1818 died aged 78 years. James born 1820 died aged 71 years. Duncan born 1822, died aged 83 years. William (my father) was born 2nd Feb 1825 died 5th May 1873 aged 48 years. Elizabeth born 1827 died aged 84 years. Thomas born 1829 died aged 80 years. David Roy born 1832 died aged about 2 years. My father was married (1852) to Annabell Culton born Jan. 3, 1829 died May 23rd, 1904 aged 75 years, daughter of James Culton (Riverton) and great-granddaughter to Anthony Culton {Ser.] who was also a Scotch emigrant about 1774 or 75. I was their only child born [17th?] March 1854…..in 1867 had ab adopted sister…Isabella Stearns born 3rd May 1866) on the 1882. I was married to Jessie Catherine Fraser born 13th March 1859 of Scotch descendants. Our family consisted of 6 daughters and 4 sons named Ella Grace born May 9th 1883. Fraser Culton born 25th Oct. 1884. Anna born 21st May 1886. Elizabeth Bannerman, born 27th March 1888. Isabella Stearns born 22nd May 1890. Barbara Jane born 29th June 1892. James William born 6th Dec. 1893. Robert Lewis born January 30th 1896. Edith Jessie born December 11th 1897. John George born November 20th, 1899.

Edith Jessie died May 17th 1907 from after effects of diphtheria after eight weeks illness.
James Alexander MacLellan died October 22nd, 1921, aged 67 years.
Jessie Catherine, his wife, died January 6th, 1944, aged 84 years, 10 months.
Elizabeth Bannerman, died July 19th, 1955, aged 67 years.
Ella Grace MacLellan, died Dec. 6, 1963, aged 80 years 7 months.
Fraser Culton MacLellan died Sept. 7, 1969, aged 85.
Anna R.N. died Aug 30., 1978, aged 92
Robert died Feb. 28th, 1980, aged 84
James died Nov. 20th, 1971, aged 78
Isabel died Aug 22., 1990, aged 100 years
Barbara died Feb. 22nd, aged 98 years.
John died 1993, died 1993, aged 94 years.

*The Hector was the first Scotch-emigrant vessel to arrive. 18 died on the passage and were cast into the sea. She had about 30 families on board. But [a few] years previous on 10th June 1767 a small vessel called the Hope arrived in Pictou harbour from Philadelphia having….”
