John Patterson was twenty five years old and single when he arrived at Pictou. In Scotland he had been a carpenter and in the Pictou district he continued with his trade, building the first windmill in the area at Mortimer’s Point. In 1779 he returned to Scotland to collect rent from houses he owned here. With the money he bought goods that he later sold to the Pictou County settlers, at a good profit.

On October 14th, 1732 he married Ann Harris.

In 1786 he bought a share in the Kennedy sawmill at Mill Brook and also in the same year he bought 190 acres of land at the head of the tide of the West River. Later, he bought 250 additional acres at Pictou for sixty two pounds. In 1788 he moved to Pictou town and a year later a son was born. From this time on, Patterson worked building the town of Pictou.

In 1792 he was chosen treasurer of the Court of Sessions and tax collector. For both jobs he received ten percent of all he taxes collected.

John Patterson died on the 10th of November, 1808 and his wife, Ann, died in 1823.”
