Death of John W Cameron

The death occurred at Bridgeville on Monday of last week of John William Cameron, one of the best known and highly respected residents of the East River.

Mr Cameron had been in failing health for more than a year and had spent some time in the Aberdeen Hospital during the past winter, yet the end came as a distinct shock to his many friends.

He was born at East River some years ago, being the son of the late Willliam Cameron.

As a young man he moved west and resided for a time in Winnipeg, but returned home about the time the New Glasgow Iron Coal & Railway Company commenced their mining operations. Associating himself with the Company he became foreman of their Bridgeville mine and retained his connection with the Company, (subsequently merged into the Nova Scotia Steel and Coal Co Ltd) until shortly before his death. Since the acquisition of the Wabana Iron Mines by the Company, Mr Cameron spent every summer in Newfoundland, returning to his home during the winter season.  Both at Bridgeville and Wabana he was universally esteemed and respected by the men under his charge, while at the same time faithful in an unwonted degree to the interest of his employers.

He was a man of sterling integrity and high character; of unassuming manner, ever courteous and yet firm in matters of principle.  In his death the whole East River mourns a kind friend and benevolent neighbour.  In politics Mr Cameron was a stalwart Liberal both by birth and connection though ever considerate fo the views of those who differed from him.  His wife, who was a daughter of the late John A Cameron Esq, predeceased him by some years.  He leaves two children, an aged mother, two sisters and one brother, who have sincere sympathy of a wide circle of friends.
